The dole has ended! No more lifetime welfare benefits. I don't advocate smoking pot, the pot smokers Ionesco has described are all professional people, and the ones at my daughter's school were, as well. So you aren't supporting any of them.

I expect people to be responsible, and I think most people are. But there are some people who get a horrible start in life because of neglect, abuse, bad nutrition, horrible parents, bad schools, etc. Children are innocent. I think societies that take interest in nurturing children so they all have a chance at success are stronger.

Also, there are people who are mentally and physically handicapped who simple are unable to take care of themselves.

The poverty rate in America is extremely high for a first world nation. You may think from your vantage point that everyone has reasonable opportunities to succeed, but they don't. Certainly all other civilized nations have safety nets so people don't go hungry, and provide basic health care.
