Awareness is limited only to the extent you choose to place self-limiting restraints on awareness.
Biological entities are subject to forces that limit them with respect to growth and activity. Such limits are endemic to each individual case, each group's condition, and with regards to biological processes in general. Non-living entities which are material substance tend to do the opposite of growth by tending more toward stagnancy and a return to singularity when left alone. Non-living entities which are not material (thought, consciousness, experience, philosophies, social systems, political systems, etc), however, do not follow the basic rules of temporality which limit by physical constraint. You benefit by influences beyond your sensory perceptions and there is no reason you should not be able to gain awareness of those if you open yourself to the possibility of that awareness. It is experiential, however, and I can't experience things for you, so to grow in this manner is to accept the challenge each of us faces, to seek the whole truth, or not.
I'll steal an example from Campbell...roughly recollected. The bacteria in your intestine benefits from sunshine, photosythesis, biomes, your parent's nutritional guidance etc etc etc. Even if the bacteria had a mind equal to yours and the sensory perception you have been given, there is no way it could perceive these forces and influences which make it's life possible and which provide continued benefit. Likewise there are many things you benefit from which are not directly observable, and yet at some level you must be aware of their existence even if you do try to close your mind to the possibilities. |
