I can't remember the currency situation exactly, but a good guess
would be a weak dollar. It peaked in '85 and dropped for a long time.

But we did have interest rates rising for several months. The talking
head types were busily convincing everyone that it didn't matter, but
ultimately it was a major contributor to the decline.
