Oops, I forgot to respond to the last part of your post:

Setting aside the fairness issues, how could any "neutral" person care as deeply about making these technologies work as those who've put in the tremendous effort to create them?

I wasn't aware that Microsoft was concerned about making these technologies work. ;)

On a serious note, anyone who has to run an application off a platform will want to make sure it works. And, if that person comes from a company other than Microsoft, he or she will want the application to run as well and as seamlessly as Microsoft applications do. Success accomplishing this goal will, in turn, strengthen the utility of the Windows platform, thereby enhancing its value, monetary and otherwise.
