Paul, It's been awhile since the 80's and I've forgotten many of the details (blocked out in disgust) - but as I remember.

Very Briefly (two finger typing is the father of austere replies):
1) The country had lost the technology race.
2) The New World Order had first come to town - along with G7 going public. They openly dictated currency policy. The politics and politicians were all in place.
3) Drastic drops in the US dollar ensued (low 80's yen was the bottom). In any case it created quite the bargain for US assets -
everything from debt to corporations to real estate. In short, the US lost it's job and was auctioning off the ranch. When the ranch was gone - the crash came.

Your NY observations sound familiar.
Broken people and broken economies demand government - health ones don't need any. Hoping for the best but fear the worst - Matt
