Twenty-seven federal non-research programs benefit people
affected by HIV and/or AIDS, at a cost of over $6 billion per
year. Of these, Medicaid is the largest funder. In Fiscal Year
1996, combined federal and state Medicaid expenditures for
people with HIV/AIDS totaled approximately $3.5 billion,
about 25% of the total cost of AIDS-related medical care.
About half of people with HIV/AIDS are enrolled in Medicaid.
