The U.S. loss-making portfolios shifted from client to client are hidden in our pension plans, and are justified through time-value-of-money and bogus forward-looking earnings estimates so nobody will question it.
My 401K company stock fund absurdly underperformed the market for years. The bond fund lost money regardless of the direction of interest rates. (I moved it into cash, my only option) As long as the fund managers allocate a reasonably small percentage labeled "high risk" they can sweep any kind of trash they want into it. The Japanese didn't keep it reasonably small.
