How could I possibly implicate myself in anything re this Newsweek story? I am simply following the news and trying to sort out the facts as they have been published in the press from hysteria, which I don't think is really helpful.

I'm not sure the story is accurate. There is an ongoing Pentagon investigation, and it has also been reported by detainees after they were released, and one author has included the story in a book published recently.

If I had to guess, I would say it has a fairly high chance of being accurate, since there have been many abuses of prisoners at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib particularly designed to break down the prisoners based on an understanding by the interrogators of what is absolutely horrific to them based on their Muslim religious beliefs. Things like the incident with the female interrogators in their underwear being seductive and smearing what they said was menstrual blood on the prisoners. Or making the prisoners strip and masturbate in front of American women soldiers, something we have actually seen on film! Or forcing the prisoners to simulate anal sex with each other, also caught on video! If we go to these lengths to humiliate them, why would flushing a Quoran down a toilet be such an atrocity that we could not possibly have done such a bad thing?

But I don't know for sure. It will be interesting to see what the investigations conclude and report.

I am not eager to believe the story is true, incidentally. It is more like I fear it might be. Liberals are horrified by what is happening in Iraq, and the human rights abuses in which our government is implicated. They are not in any way gleeful, if that is what you are suggesting.
