Our Constitution has been in existence for about 219 years. I've existed for about one-third of those years. For most of that time, I've excused my passive acceptance of my country's gradual degradation on the grounds that I couldn't change it. Well, maybe I can't, but someone has to make the first step ... and the first step is to conceive of a way to select representatives who are not burdened with the baggage of "party loyalty".

I am about the same age as you and I mostly agree with you wrt how I feel about the direction that our country is taking.

However, in this case I don't think it is the systems fault. Any system takes on a life and direction of its own and over time people will find a way to use the system to circumvent the system.

It does not matter what system they are confronted with, people like Karl Rove will use the system to abuse the system.

We know what is good and what is bad. We know good people when we meet them and we know who the scoundrals are. The problem is that most of us compromise our principles and try to get along with those that abuse the system - just to be fair and balanced.

Take the Abramoff case as one example. We are blaming the system for what he is doing. We say that he contributed to both parties. It is a bipartisan failure. The only problem with this is that that is not true. Abramoff is a Republican party problem but we are going to try to fix this problem without identifying the specific problem (and or disease) and come up with some generic solution that people like Abramoff will easily circumvent the next time.
