I suspect you're probably describing a past era. Very few people still run around looking like Paul Manafort sporting his retro-1980s look.

The urban grunge look is very popular in the San Francisco Bay Area among software engineers and managers earning $150k annually and up. Compare the look of these Department Managers at Facebook in the top photo . .

. . . with the photos below that of employees at very conservative Chevron headquarters in San Ramon. Even Chevron CEO John Watson favors jeans and a polo shirt at company headquarters when not at a public meeting or on TV. - I never dressed down like like that I worked there. It's a startling change.

Of course if you want a service job with a company catering to these professionals, your employer will want you wearing a more clean-cut and generic look, if not also in a service uniform or at least a company shirt with your name on a badge or monogrammed onto the shirt old-style.

Facebook Department Managers sporting the currently fashionable urban grunge look. One even sporting a cast, likely from an injury while skateboarding. - You might wish to earn as much as they do.

Chevron execs at San Ramon headquarters It looks like they're dressed for the weekend. Two of the employees in those photos are actually Senior VPs at Chevron on a normal business day !

But Whole Foods . . . prefers their Minimum Wage associates to be clean-cut and dressed in a more conservative manner with a company shirt and name tag.

No highly paid software engineers wearing grunge need apply here!
