Tango,

Here is what I own and why:

AMTX - to many reasons to go into. It is (and will likely remain)
the only really speculative stock I am invested in.

PAIR - Easy to figure out why (I think) if you study them. Some
are concerned with the PE, perhaps justifiably so. I do not worry
about it much cause I tend to buy and hold.

WSTL - Trying to cover my bases here.

ADCT - They sole source HDSL to a couple Bells according to an
analyst report I got from PAIR. (US West and Ameritech?) They have
the broadest portfolio of products that I am aware of for a company
with a market cap of 2-3 billion.

I also believe they will be a successful ADSL player, but if not-hey
they still have lots going for them.

I think Orckit is worth watching because people whose opinions I
respect here, (like Dave) say it is. Others, as you know can watch
50 stocks well. My brain is not large enough to do that at the
comfort level I require. That is not to suggest I am oblivious
to what CAWS, ELICF, BBTK, USRX and ASND, among others are doing.
I just have limited resourses, of comprehension, time and most
importantly money.

>So, most xDSL modems come with a POTS splitter.

That's what Amati says theirs comes with. If it does not, the
product is not nearly as valuable.

>The backbone mostly exists to connect to an ISP...

This is a tricky question. "Backbone" can mean lots of things.
For example, a T1 could be thought of as 24 seperate backbones for
24 seperate networks. They can slice and dice (read that multiplex)
this stuff a lot of ways - and do.

I am not real familiar with Bell/CO offices but the "backbone" I am
imagining in GTE/Pac ADSL trials is just one logical pipe. Physically,
it could be one or more things. (including a Microwave shot from CO
to NAP)

>All that is needed is some kind of routing...

Yep! People a lot smarter than me will decide where to physically
locate the HW. Lots of trades offs to consider.

>The kind o[f] switches...

You got it. But really its the kind of routing S/W used.
I think its safe to say the internet is IP based. IMO,
the Bells, etc.. should (and are) focusing on how to solve
that problem.

Cheers,
Daniel

Fortuanetly, the methods at their disposal are tried and true.

Cheers,
Daniel
