It saddens me to see Terri Schiavo turned into political fodder.

I think she's the poster child for a lot of people who cannot speak for themselves.

Should we euthanize people with Alzheimer's? How about children with Down's syndrome, or more serious forms of retardation? People who are paralyzed? Where do we draw the line?

It's easy for me -- if someone is dying, let them die if that's what they want. But if they are not dying, don't kill them. How hard can that be? No slippery slope, but a bright line. First, do no harm.

That's the oath that physicians take. First, do no harm.
