Four geurrillas dead after Hezbollah attacks Israeli army

IN MARJAYOUN, LEBANON

UP TO four Hezbollah gunmen and an Israeli were killed during a guerrilla attack at the Israeli-Lebanese border yesterday.

The largest assault in five years in the disputed Shebaa Farms area - the scene of sporadic fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli army since Israel pulled its forces from south Lebanon in 2000 - triggered two and a half hours of Israeli air strikes and fierce artillery and rocket duels.

According to Israeli security sources, three or four guerrillas died after storming the border village of Ghajar and exchanging fire with the Israeli garrison there.

Witnesses said earlier that Hezbollah guerrillas launched a major attack against Israeli army posts in an occupied border area, in what Lebanese security sources said was an attempt to capture Israelis.

Hezbollah has vowed to try to win the release of Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners in Israel through capturing Israeli forces. Israel has in the past released hundreds of prisoners in exchange for Israeli detainees or the remains of dead soldiers.

An Israeli army post in the area went up in flames after it was attacked with rockets, mortars and machine-guns. Hezbollah guerrillas were seen in several villages and towns during the fighting. Rocket-launchers were deployed to fire Katyusha missiles at Israeli posts.

Israel retaliated by launching eight air strikes against targets on the Lebanese side of the border, witnesses said.
