Re swallowing and feeding, FWIW, I just heard a British doctor saying that it's common for such patients to be able to swallow but their swallowing is inept and unreliable so there's risk that they will aspirate their food. Thus they are given a feeding tube despite the ability to swallow. (Having heard that again, I remembered that I once knew it but had forgotten.)
