Its hard to imagin today, but can you believe, I was PRESENT when the Seminole Nation signed a peace treaty with the USA govt. in 1953!!!
Even in my young adulthood there used to be a sign as you entered the Seminole Reservation from "Alligator Alley" that said, "Caution, you are leaving USA territory, United States Law no longer applies" .
Some tribes have done very well with their lands and autonomy. Example, the Seminoles, others like the Chippewa havent. I suppose its like anything else, some better governed then others. jdn
