If you definitely want someone to answer a post at Feelies, it is probably better to address it to someone. I almost missed this one because I am behind and not doing such a good job at catching up. So I was concentrating on posts addressed to me.
I am probably the most staunch animal rights advocate here, and I don't know the answer to your question. All the animal rights groups I know of are involved in campaigning for the rights of SENTIENT creatures--animals, fish, birds, etc. I would not include bacteria in this group.
Most vegans do not eat honey, because part of being an animal rights believer is that animals make their own products for their own use. Silk would also be included here, for the same reason. And most vegans try to avoid killing insects and spiders whenever possible.
However, life is not perfect. My brother has moved into our shed out in the backyard, which was filled with boxes we haven't gotten around to unpacking, and other dark places that attract spiders. When he is in the house he carefully captures spiders and takes them outside and releases them, because that is the kind of household I want to live in, and he honors that. But at the same time, my brother got a staph infection from a brown recluse spider bite a couple of years ago, and was seriously ill from the infection. There are brown recluse spiders in the shed. So we are bug bombing the shed once a month. However, I am also going to get the electronic plug in bug/spider devices that disorient them and cause them to go back outside, because I really don't want any spiders to die. I just want to make sure my brother doesn't. So everything is relative. |
