PC Data Ranks VirusScan as Top Selling Product

Tops Symantec in Both Revenue and Units Sold

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ --
McAfee Assoc. (Nasdaq: MCAF), the leading
provider of network security and management
software, today announced that in the most recent
report published by the channel sales research
company PC Data, McAfee's VirusScan was the
number one selling independent channel product for
Windows PCs. Furthermore, VirusScan single unit
sales displaced Symantec's (Nasdaq: SYMC) Norton
Antivirus as the #1 selling anti-virus product through
indirect channels. Also, when taken in total, the
McAfee VirusScan family of products outsold
Symantec Anti-Virus products in both unit volume
and dollar revenue. Dr. Solomon's (Nasdaq: SOLLY)
Antivirus ToolKit didn't make PC Data's list of more
than 200 titles in the United States.

With more than 80% of the Fortune 100 using the
company's products, McAfee is the world's leading
provider of network security software to businesses
around the world. While McAfee has primarily
focused on building a direct sales and support
organization to meet the needs of these large,
multinational clients, the company has also expanded
its distribution architecture to encompass indirect
sales. The PC Data report validates the success of
this strategy to date.

"These latest numbers from PC Data are a strong
validation of McAfee's leadership position, regardless
of whether the product is delivered by us or our
partners," said Peter Watkins, general manager of
McAfee's Network Security Division. "We are
grateful to our channel partners who have, in a very
short time, transformed VirusScan into the leading
independent software product for Windows-based
personal computers."

This announcement comes shortly after McAfee
solidified its position as the leading anti-virus provider
in the OEM market by announcing partnerships with
seven leading PC manufacturers, including Acer,
AST, Compaq, Fujitsu, Gateway 2000,
Hewlett-Packard, and NEC. These OEMs produce
approximately 70 percent of those PCs shipped in the
U.S. by the industry's top ten PC manufacturers. The
units shipped as a part of these OEM agreements are
not counted in the PC Data report.

Founded in 1989, McAfee is a leading worldwide
vendor of network security and management
products for enterprise networks. The company is
also a leader in Internet and Web-based electronic
software distribution. McAfee is headquartered in
Santa Clara, California, and can be reached at
408-988-3832 or on the Internet at
