WASHINGTON — The Pentagon's new emphasis on intelligence gathering overseas has led to a major expansion of espionage operations and a more prominent role for intelligence officers in military decision making and war planning, Defense officials said Wednesday.

As part of the plan, the Pentagon is expanding the number of spies and special operations forces abroad and creating new intelligence analysis centers inside military commands worldwide, the officials said.

We are going back to our roots. I consider this a terrific Rumsfeld generated program. Our military has huge under-utilized intelligence capabilities. Every military unit Bn size and larger has an intelligence staff. Many smaller units have trained intell personnel including one intelligence NCO on every "A" Team in SF.
Military intell gathering operations were sharply curtailed in the 60s after a few of our Counter-intelligence operators were assassinated. Not ended...but really cut back. We need to be utilizing that capacity now before we create yet another Intelligence gathering arm of government.
