The narrow win of the Governor race on the third recount could haunt Democrats if Dino Rossi places his sights on the Senate seat in 2006. Thanks to the sympathy that an arguably stolen race create, Rossi has a resevoir of support that is hard for Republicans to achieve in Washington. He also has enviable name recognition over other candidates. Strategic Vision is a Republican pollster according to Kos, and RealClearPolitics found that they skewed toward President Bush in their final polls in 2004.

Rasmussen also has a poll on Rossi and Cantwell. 2/22, n=500 (MoE 4.5%)

Rossi (R) 47
Cantwell (D) 44

That shows a little lower support than Strategic Vision, but definitely not where an incumbent expects to be. Cantwell looks weak regardless of who runs. According to Strategiv Vision polls, her support hovers around 50 against candidates with much lower name recognition. Without Rossi, it will be an uphill battle but it will not be a cakewalk for Ms. Cantwell.

Washington is a blue leaning state, but only went for Kerry 53%-46% or alternatively 1.5 million to 1.3 million. It's partisan breakdown is 36% Democrat, 32% Republican, 33% Independent. There are more red states to contest (FL, NE, ND, WV), but WA is worth our time and effort.
