That's right, on the whole the bad guys don't have guns. There are guns in NZ, of course, since hunting is popular (ducks, deer, pigs, rabbits), so there are shootings, and some crime using guns. But the number of guns per capita in NZ must be tiny compared with the US, and also the type of guns and the availability is very different. As far as I know, none of my friends has a gun. We do have the occasional crazed gun collector who goes off the rails and shoots a few people, and the occasional hold-up in which someone gets shot, or gangs (after watching too much TV) exchanging fire. Such events are more common now than 50 years ago, but still at a very low level, and the police go to considerable lengths to get the guns out of the hands of the crooks and cretins. Public sentiment here is widely supportive of keeping guns under tight control.
