The state of the union is put on for the benefit of the people. The people, imo, own the union, or should- and they should be able to wear what they want- "support the troops", or "how many more"- it doesn't matter. I don't like time place and manner restrictions, and feel they should be extremely limited in a vibrant democratic country- which we do not have, of course (not to mention that the Sheehan thing wasn't even legal- and the police made a "mistake")- but I find TPM to be a fantastic excuse for controlling bureaucrats to limit speech. There is no requirement to show respect to your country- maybe you are pissed off, and you don't feel very respectful- you should be able to express that.

There are no public places which should limit what people wear on their T-shirts- unless the T-shirt is actually obscene- that's one of the few free speech exceptions. I can see requiring people to wear clothes, but limiting what they wear? It would be a rare case where I would agree with that in a public place, where a public event was going on, that was for all the American people. That you and I might think it is inappropriate isn't the point- it is a big country, and you and I are not going to agree that every sartorial choice or every demonstration is appropriate- but jumping from inappropriate to having guards dragging people off, is quite the leap. I can't agree with the jump to police enforcement of "appropriate" dress codes for T-shirts with printing on them. It's too close to a real ban on speech.

I will not agree with you on this.
