Very much so. As you know, there're many other periods of major socio-economic and population collapse associated with wars of extermination, pestilence, and especially when major empires come to an end. A lot of superb research has been published about it.

Collapse of Complex Societies, by Tainter is the best executive summary out there, IMO. Bot my copy over 10 yrs ago. Price has gone far too hi in recent years. Hope there's a new edition soon to eliminate that problem. In the meantime, probably available from a good library.
