Back in '84 my cousin, who has a master's in engineering, was lamenting that his son wasn't going to go to college. The lad went into commercial chimney cleaning and two years later was making more than his father. He put the extra money into rental properties and also became a partner in the cleaning company. Now he's making more than his father dreamed of and will retire when he's around 45 on only $20k a month.
