Girl Prohibited From Singing Religious Song

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A public school prohibited a second grader from singing a religious song at a talent show, prompting a lawsuit Friday alleging violation of the girl’s constitutional rights.

A federal judge declined an emergency request to compel Frenchtown Elementary School to allow 8-year-old Olivia Turton to sing “Awesome God” at the Friday night show, but allowed the lawsuit to go forward.

School officials in the western New Jersey community had said the performance would be inappropriate at a school event. A message seeking comment from a school board attorney about the judge’s ruling was not immediately returned.

The school officials are overstepping their bounds here.

This was not a song chosen by the school for performance, this is a song chosen by a little girl and her parents for a talent show sponsored by the school. Thus it cannot be said that the school is endorsing any particular religion by allowing its performance. Rather, the school is simply allowing one of its students to perform a song about her particular religion. Would the school officials have stopped a Native American student from performing a traditional song his or her tribe? I don’t think so. This is just another case of the P.C. police trying to erase any trace of Christian religion from public life.

As for the appropriateness of the song itself, which I am familiar with, it does not advocate hate or violence nor is it sexually suggestive in any way. The only thing “inappropriate” about it, apparently, is that it is Christian in nature and thus offensive to the undoubtedly typical liberal sensibilities of these school administrators.

I am a devout atheist, but even I can recognize the fact that one of the founding ideals of this nation was that citizens were to live with freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.
