John Fowler. Re: "Don't you think Microsoft deserves at least an honorable mention?" That's a very interesting point. You sure can't have faster semiconductors without software to work on it.

However, it may be hard to measure MSFT's contribution and the speed of semiconductors probably contributed to the faster growth of the internet and personal productivity more than just the software.

I am reminded by the comparison between today's technology revolution and how electricity stepped up the industrial revolution at the turn of the century. When factories were built around the new electric machines, that's when productivity really took off. So the shift from mainframe to PC's accelerated productivity by giving more power to the person. And the internet has put productivity into overdrive, IMHO.

MSFT certainly deserves some of the credit for that.
