If you think that the media is government controlled, more power to you. The big story, media- wise, is the decentralization of it all, through new technologies like cable, satellite, and the personal computer wired to the Internet.
If you think anyone is going to the trouble and expense to have an extensive dossier on you, or, once produced, anyone bothers to read it, well, you must be far more important than you let on. Things like 9-11 happen precisely because we do not have a bunch of people spying on us, ordinarily, and therefore people can get away with all sorts of things.
If you think that we do not know what our government is doing, then you have never helped yourself of the wealth of data available on the Internet or in public libraries or through the telephone. You can get all kinds of stuff about the budget and naval ordnance and how this or that bureau operates. Yes, there is restricted information, but there is plenty that is just there for the asking.
The economy is not on a "war footing", the military budget is a relatively low percentage of GDP. There is no large secret police force, which is why we have a problem with terrorists, cannot effectively interdict drugs, and are awash in illegal aliens. Even if it were true that 40% of the population uses illegal drugs (which I doubt), there is no martial law, we do not have checkpoints, soldiers roaming the streets, the constant need to produce ID, universal curfews, courts martial as summary tribunals, and the like, and most "heads" are unmolested (marijuana is the most common illegal drug, and few police departments devote many resources to enforcement).
