The Haast eagle was a predator of moa, possibly the biggest birds to have lived. It is generally accepted (but who really knows?) that the arrival of homo sapiens (Maori) put an end to the moa, and the Haast eagle died out shortly afterwards, since its prey had gone and presumably human beings weren't so easy to catch. We can speculate that the eagles took children, but I'm not aware of any evidence.
