The suits are for $19.95 PAID in the first month of the plan (and 1-2 year prepays). (The punitive damages part is, however quite arguable)

What's at stake is much higher than with the overcharging suits
settled last fall. The settlement there was for free time that
amounted to $0.30 per sub, and much of that was never used.

It would be ludicrous to offer free time to settle complaint of
inability to get onto the service! Cash on the barrlehead refunds
is what they want.

AOL is in PR pickle. Either they look foolish ("well, plenty of
customers are able to log in"; which is like reporting a car
accident and saying the good news is lots of cars didn't crash)
or they look customer-unfriendly (as in legal arguments like
the TOS says nothing about service level guarantees).
