SAN FRANCISCO -- eBay's system took Monday morning off after an attempted software upgrade Sunday night brought the online auctioneer's services crashing down.      As of 11:30 a.m. PST, the system was on its way back, but not yet fully operable.      In trading during the day, eBay Inc stock price was down $10 to $172.      Network engineers were attempting to upgrade software used to manage eBay's data storage system, known as redundant array of independent disks, or RAID system.      "We had practiced this upgrade on another system, and it went without problems," eBay's support staff reported to the user message boards. "However, when we tried it tonight, it promptly ate several gigabytes of data."      Today's system outage follows on the heels of a 3 November incident that closed eBay's trading for two hours, infuriating users who said they lost money when auctions went afoul.      The latest outage has stopped trading nearly six times as long as the previous shutdown. EBay is now entering its twelth hour without service.      Online auctions that were supposed to close during the outage period will be extended for 24 hours, the company said. Good short sell now? |
