MobileStar To Close?

(11/10/2001, BWCS Staff) Reports are circulating that the largest independent wireless LAN hotspot provider, MobileStar has made nearly its entire workforce redundant. According to several online newswires MobileStar has laid off 88 employees and may be forced to sell off its network of wireless LAN hotspots. The company has so far refused to comment on the rumours but if confirmed the news will send shockwaves throughout the public access wireless LAN sector.

MobileStar has long been held up as a shining example by the wireless ISP community due to its aggressive rollout of W-LAN hotspot networks in airports, hotels and cafes across the US. The company hit the headlines in January 2001 when it entered a strategic partnership with Microsoft and Starbucks Coffee Company to install high speed wireless networks in all 4,000 Starbucks outlets. MobileStar had set a goal of establishing 2,000 hotspot networks across the US by the end of 2001 but has so far only installed around 500.

Although it is as yet unclear exactly how badly MobileStar is struggling it is highly likely that the downturn in the US economy coupled with the knock-on effects of the 11 September terrorist attacks have resulted in a sharp decline in usage of its wireless ISP services.
