Proxy Monitor urges independent chairman at Advanced Micro

NEW YORK, April 19 (Reuters) - Proxy Monitor, a group that advises institutional investors about corporate governance and other matters, said Wednesday that it has recommended a vote in favor of a CalPERS resolution calling for the election of an independent director as chairman of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. <AMD.N>.

CalPERS, the California Public Employees Retirement System, is proposing a binding change in the company's bylaws. It is not proposing a specific individual for the job of chairman.

Currently W.J. Sanders is both chairman and chief executive of Advanced Micro.

The resolution is on the ballot for the Advanced Micro annual meeting scheduled for April 27 in New York.
