It has been said that blogs will become an unofficial watchdog for the media and stop journalists getting away with sloppy research and writing.

Its already happened. Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo is widely credited with breaking the Trent Lott story and staying with it until it eventually gained the notice of the larger media.

The blogs have been anywhere from two to three months ahead of the traditional media in discussing the Niger yellowcake story and the Iraq intelligence hype debate in general.

For the mass media to just now be noticing blogs speaks volumes about the inherent differences in the two.
