Canal Plus Counts Subscriber Rise
PARIS, France, 97/02/21 (TS) -- France's top pay TV broadcaster, Canal
Plus, said it's subscriber figures had jumped 13 percent in 1996 to 8.2
million subscribers. In France, subscribers to its flagship Canal Plus
channel, which is available on satellite, cable and terrestrial services,
rose 3.3 percent to 4.2 million. In Germany, it counted a 32 percent rise
in subscribers to part-owned Premiere with a total of 1.4 million subscribers.

It's new multichannel digital satellite program, Canal Satellite, saw a
46 percent rise to 446,106 subscribers in France and a doubling to 98,681
in Spain.

Meanwhile, recent figures released in France show a slight increase in
the number of homes receiving basic cable TV. The figure rose from 1.3
million to 1.47 million, which still represents a small percentage of homes.
