But do you think they knew ahead of time that the design would not stand up to the competition? This is not to find fault but to understand better what went on back then.

AMD would probably not be in the microprocessor business without purchase of NextGen. K5 was way behind the competition at that time. Was there any other internal project on the way after K5?
