Barb - thanks for the report from Nikkei Business on FEDs

There were a few technical errors in this report, but overall it covers FEDs fairly well. The report is from April '96 so it is a bit out of date now. Each of the manufacturers mentioned is making or testing displays one size larger than reported in April.

One strange thing catches my eye in this and most other reports in FEDs. The journalists *always* mention that PixTech is an American company. Which is strange since they are located in France, and all their employees speak English with a strong French accent (if at all). The journalists never seem to mention that TI or Motorola are American. I wonder why PixTech gets the special flag-waving treatment?

The big picture is very much as Nikkei Business reported: FEDs are coming fast, and are aiming at a price point better than TFT-LCDs with superior electrical and optical performance. But LCD prices are dropping faster than anyone would have believed possible. LCDs are an inherently difficult and limited technology that no one thought would come as far as they have. Having seen their rediculous success, it's hard to say when LCDs will reach their limits.

To briefly update their report, Motorola is building a fab in Chandler, AZ. TI has given up on FEDs, choosing to concentrate on micromirrors. Silicon Video has changed its name to Candescent Technologies, hired me, and is building prototypes. I will be working on the scaleup to 12" and beyond in 1997.
