Unfortunately, when the districts are redone, the difference won't be much. Voters are separated out geographically so much that surveys have shown the numbers will be about the same in California. Hopefully, though, more districts will be close enough that the polarization won't be as bad.

You missed our "journey with Arnold" here. Mike Murphy, his advisor, did exactly the right thing. Isolated Arnold from the LA Times and the SF Chronicle, who were out to defeat him. As you know, Arnold has turned out to be one of the best "pols" at state level in the country. He is driving the California Dems nuts.
