Gregor,

In Christ's words "the love of money being the root of all evil" I see the pursuit of gain as reaching out for power. Not always but often over other people as well as over ones own destiny, control over our circumstances.
Efforts to create our own holiness by obedience to the law is similar to those who view their "holy living" as the children of pride thinking that God has to bless them for it as though He must obey us. I heard recently that at a point where we think we have conquered pride we fall victim to it again.
All... everything is by God's grace. How and where He uses us, when He uses us and How He responds is all by His grace. Yet we can praise Him in that in His love He tells us to ask that we might receive. From Him come all good gifts.
All occultists and dabblers, spiritualists essentialy seek power.
As Christians we do as well because He has told us He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. God offers it but to gain it He says "surrender." Give up control to be in control. His control, and watch unimaginable victories by the power of His Spirit.
Anything else and we stumble. Yet with His loving hand when we can honestly say before Him "I am willing" He puts us in line.
In Christ,
John
