Definitely not the first or last time for that (agreeing to disagree)!
Let me ask a serious question, though. When you use the acronym PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals), I'm sure you think that is very funny. That is the kind of humor I'm talking about, though. Are the animals really as tasty once you know they have suffered every moment of their lives? Once you know a chicken lives in less space than a piece of printer paper and never sees daylight and cannot flap its wings its whole life? Would you be in despair if you lived your whole life in a cage so small you couldn't stretch your legs or arms, covered in the urine of others of your species and the dying and dead bodies of your friends and family members? Would you like that? Do you ever think about how the pig you're eating gnawed at its metal bars out of boredom and frustration and could not move or play, and yet is as sensitive and intelligent as your dog? Can you visualize your dog treated like that its whole life, with its big sensitive eyes, in a tiny confinement pen? Would you eat your pet? When you eat a pig it is just like eating your pet. You are eating an animal that is just as affectionate and loving and aware as your dog. Is the meat really still that tasty when you know all that? Is People Eating Tasty Animals really such a humorous retort? I think humor often allows us to be extremely insensitive about the plight of minorities, animals, our enemies, whatever. I think it allows us to be inhumane. And so I just don't think stuff like that is funny anymore, but for a very deep and, I think at least, valid reason. I am just asking you to be sensitive for a moment, and maybe think of things in a different way, rather than just agreeing to disagree, although of course at the end you might still do that. |
