Rural uneducated people and hip-hop songsters see both themselves, probably correctly, as the center of their own micro-cultures.

I have little or no contact with either of these micro-cultural groups, but that's probably because I don't seek them out - and why should I?

In Los Angeles I'm more likely to run across Russians with a particular dislike of Putin, entertainment industry employees with a hypersensitivity to what new shows are about to be approved, and immigrants from Latin America, legal and undocumented, trying to make the alleged 'American dream" true for themselves. Most generally see themselves and their own micro-culture the center of the universe.

When I was a kid, American culture was more influenced by Cold-War propaganda and a pressure to conform. We all watched Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose battle the Russian spies Boris Badinov and his over-sized but svelte companion Natasha - and at school attended monthly legally-mandatory "American Flag Ceremonies".

I remember that frightened culture but have no desire to resurrect it. At that time, one of the few other places on the planet where you could experience a similar conformity and sense of Clod War purpose was in the Eastern Bloc nations. Most of the remaining regions on the planet were not so affected by this militarized lock-step thinking, and I can't say they missed-out on much of anything.

In a multi-cultural society you'd probably do better focusing on your own life than nattering like a judgmental old woman gossiping about what brand of underwear neighboring families purchase and what time they come and go from their homes. It is curious though that "judgmental old woman micro-culture" seems remarkably similar from one region or culture to another. This could indicate that it's more of a human psychological pathology than a true culture.
