FACTBOX-Companies swing jobs axe to save profits

LONDON, Sept 4 (Reuters) - British Airways Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BAY.L) will cut 1,800 jobs by the end of this year a spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The cuts represented about three percent of the staffing that the airline reported for its first quarter to June 30.

More than 400,000 job cuts have been announced in the last few months as companies around the world wrestle with slowing growth and plunging demand.

The following is a list of job cuts announced recently by some of the biggest companies. Telecommunications contributed around half of the overall losses.

The table shows the date when the cuts were announced and only includes layoffs of 1,000 or more.
