My guess is the real beneficiaries of this kind of system would be old-line manufacturers who spend $billions on raw materials or semi-finished goods and need to schedule final production on a just-in-time-basis. Does that make sense ?

Yes - absolutely but that is only the first wave of recipients.

Forrester and others have done studies that show logistics costs amount on average to 30% cogs, of course this varies by industry but the purchasing and warehousing of production materials is costly and amounts to a huge amt of what you pay.

The new wave of supply chain management is using the internet + xml to open up the chain, thats why I like webm, I see it as an SCM company which manages logistics transactions between trading partners where there was no connectivity before. Of course there is a long way to go, since a lot of the xml documents for logistics haven't been defined yet.

re: nuan, I'm not sure I made my point. I'm just saying that if you are going to buy into v-xml, then there is a whole host of options, speechworks, tellme, hearnow etc etc. I haven't heard anyone question whether nuan had the best value chain... well there is lhsp but certainly none of the others. Thats what I want to know, what is the best company... not whether the space is valid, I will determine that on my own.
