Vitamin P, wazzit?
Vitamin P is a term coined by the bioflavonoid discoveror, Szent-Gyorgy who won the Nobel prize for finding that these classes of substances were more responsible for preventing scurvy than Vitamin C.
The strange thing is, S-G was lauded for a while, then his principles forgotten for 4 decades. Vitamin P is not a shelf-vitamin, but a term applied to 4,000 different substances found in citrus fruits, pine bark, onions, apples, green tea, whale oil, many vegetables, soy and some meats. Quercetin, citrus bioflavonoids, soy isoflavones, proanthocyanidin, terpenol, phenol (two found in tea), flavones, catechins, caratenoids, etc.. there are phytosterols in celery that reduce bp, and cholesterol. Effects are all good in this class. Eat a half pound of celery a day and your bp could drop 20 points! A doctor proved this on a relative, but the celery cure is only theoretical to medical science still! Naturally Pfizer, the makers of lipitor do not want the fruit and vegetable department of its enemy, the natural produce purveryor cutting into its business! You don't see the message "eat lots of fruit and vegetabls and supplement with anti-oxidants and niacin, and maybe you won't need this bottle.." on a pill bottle of your favourite statin drug. Yet 40,000,000 people are convinced otherwise.
(This is not to say that statin drugs are not efficacious nor is it to say that some people are not well advised to take them, but let's just say an ounce of prevention may be the real Rx for the future ...)
We consider Vit P as part of the C group. They act together to fight free radicals that may damage aterial linings, joints, or cell. Free radicals are not all bad, as they are there to fight foreign invaders like virii, bacteria and infection. It is a tightrope balance. Bioflavonoids, a catch term for this class, which is actually a class in itself, serve to reconstitute other anti-oxidants as well as de-oxidize harmful oxides in themselves. They are up to 100 times more effective than some of the vitamins.
Many other substances de-oxidize too, including aminos, hormones, vitamins and minerals. The bodiy's main de-oxidant is dlutathione, which glutamine is the main precursor. Fighting oxidation also fights fatigue, cleaning up muscle and lymph waste, which explains in part the weighlifter's use of amines and steroids to promote his desired "anabolic" (muscle building) state. Leucine, valine and isoleucine do this, and will help weight loss. More amino combos to help. It would pay to get bulk aminos and mix them in a balanced fashion according to Mindell (Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible).
If you take aminos, you need to detoxify the aminos too, so you have to take the lipotropics, choline, inositol, betaine, and methionine. This helps take fat from the liver and incidentally6 fights cholesterol. This is all known to nutritionists, but the MD's are often clued out, searching for a magic bullet to curb a condition that is most likely caused by out of balance exercise and diet for upwards of 20 years in the individual. As well most pros are looking for the simple fix that they can condition the patient to. i.e. to be able get him to take the Rx. 90% of people will not get hot on these therapies, nor can be convinced to 'take the medicine' every day. Too much work. Dying slowly is far easier for them.
"Give me one pill or give me death seems to be the message." Yet the solution is in books and on the shelf. Not that cheap, but it's there. Ruin your health with bad living and worse food for 30 years, and the solution should be in one bottle? I don't see, and apparently neither does maw. Maw nature.
Super Anti-Ox(s) from Now or Omega-Alpha have many of the classes of flavonoids, and other Vit P substances. Ditto Falvin 7+, and a few others.
Interestingly black tea is as good as green tea for fighting heart disease and cancer. Not so coffee. Caffeine in excess has inflammatory properties and can cause C and HD to a degree.
Raw food has lipase and choline in it. Cooked does not as much. This helps explain why eating raw potatoes will not gain you weight when cooked definitely will. The hippy dippy's are right. Raw veggies, where digestible, are the key to eating, being full and not bloating up. Raw fat too. Outside of the fact that the Eskimo could not cook most of the time, he needed the raw food for its attendant goodies. But our raw meat would have too many parasites. Overcooking is the enemy here. Again, a balance to walk.
