This is a huge development. previously they were only making thick films. Now that they've got thin films they can start making them with Si-28.

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 8, 2003--Isonics Corporation (NASDAQ:ISON), a leader in the development of isotopically engineered semiconductor materials and a supplier of thick-film silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers, announced that they have successfully produced thin-film SOI wafers using an internally developed process.

James E. Alexander, Isonics' Chairman and CEO, commented, "For the past year we have been working to define a thin-film SOI manufacturing process which is consistent with our low-cost paradigm. Our thin-film process, which is code named Sigma-1, is built on our proven thick-film process and utilizes many of the same tools and equipment we already own. This will allow us to produce meaningful quantities of Sigma-1 wafers without the need for further capital investment."

"We routinely receive inquiries for thin-film SOI wafers so we know that this market segment is quite dynamic and that there is demand for alternative sources of supply, such as Isonics," Mr. Alexander continued. "We have accepted our first order for a lot of Sigma-1 wafers which we plan to ship this month."

Thin-film SOI wafers are generally used for the most leading edge electronics applications, while thick-film SOI wafers are used to manufacture micro electrical mechanical systems (MEMS) and certain other electronic devices. Gartner Dataquest projects that the overall market for SOI wafers will grow to $1.4 billion by 2007.

Isonics presently offers thin-film Sigma-1 SOI wafers in 100 mm to 150 mm diameters to typical industry specifications. Isonics also offers all sizes of thick-film SOI wafers. Customers wishing information or to request a proposal should send an inquiry to soi@isonics.com or contact Renie Duvall at (360)885-9310.
