Debka writes on something that was buzzing around my brain a bit but which had not yet jelled--the Iraqi insurgents seem to be engaging in larger rather than smaller operations.

A sign of desperation? Grandiosity?

They need headlines & some sign that they are still there, still powerful, still in control somewhere.

How a series of failed attacks gets this for them I do not understand. To me, it makes less sense for Zarqawi than for the Palestinians, who still have the protective umbrella of the "peace process" and Israel's restraint. Even for the Pals, it makes little sense to ratchet up to larger attacks, because that only gives the Israelis world 'permission' to attack back in force.
