OTTAWA — Opposition MPs called on media organizations Tuesday to fire a former Brian Mulroney aide and former ambassador to Israel for referring to Belinda Stronach as a bitch.
New Democrat MP Dawn Black said it was "shocking" that anyone would use Norman Spector as a political commentator and columnist after his remarks.
Spector told a Vancouver radio talk show that Stronach's public breakup last year with Peter MacKay, who is now foreign affairs minister, as well as a role she is alleged to have had in the marital problems of former Toronto Maple Leaf Tie Domi, means she is a bitch.
"I think she's a bitch. It's as simple as that," Spector said. He added that he believed 90 per cent of men would agree, considering her involvement with the former National Hockey League player and her break-up with MacKay.
In court documents, Domi's estranged wife named Stronach as the other woman. The allegation has not been proven in court.
"I find it shocking that people would use him now that he has displayed such horrible language around women," Black said.
"(Media organizations) may want to have a word with Mr. Spector and get some assurances from him that he will apologize for this kind of behaviour." Only if Belinda apologises for being what she is LOL
Spector, who was also Canada's ambassador to Israel, did not back down from the remarks, telling the Globe and Mail that the Oxford English Dictionary backed up his description of Stronach as someone who is malicious or treacherous.
Judy Wasylycia-Leis, another New Democrat MP, said Spector's comments were an affront to not only Stronach, but to women throughout Canada. Get a grip woman... live the sword , die by the sword... Should be running away fast from her... if you were smart..
"What he has done is absolutely unforgivable," she said.
"It hurts women everywhere, and there is no place for that kind of language and that kind of attitude in our society today." I dunno I bet Tie Domi's wife enjoyed... it... I guess Judy thinks she speaks for all somen 'cause she's a woman... What a sleazy political tactic that is... keeps on working in Canada...sigh...
Spector's political commentaries are regularly published in the Globe and Mail. He is also a frequent commentator on TV and radio.
In the Commons, the Liberals demanded assurances from the Tories that they would distance themselves from Spector.
"I wonder if the prime minister would simply give Canadians the absolute assurance that Mr. Norman Spector, a former Conservative government operative, will never again speak in any capacity for the government of Canada," asked Liberal House Leader Ralph Goodale.
Conservative Government House Leader Rob Nicholson replied that Spector wasn't speaking on the government's behalf.
"That individual doesn't speak for the government," said Nicholson.
"If he speaks for anybody he's surely doing it for himself, that's all." |
