Well, affluence generally is helpful, though remote for a lot of countries. But that does not mean that influence has nothing to do with it. Numerous dissidents in the Soviet Union expressed their indebtedness to Radio Free Europe, for example, and the student protesters in Tianenman Square paraded with a replica of the Statue of Liberty. When Ronald Reagan called upon Gorbachev to prove his sincerity by tearing down the Berlin Wall, it was a galvanizing moment. There it was, the final symbol of the Eastern bloc as a prison, having to hold its people in, and subject to the vicious standing order to shoot to kill if anyone tried to escape. The effect was incalculable.........
