Maybe they are looking at the advantages of other non-volatile (non-flash) memory solutions on the horizon and decided to diversify???

SEG is cashing in its chips to get a nice bag of change to hold up in front of the current shareholders to say...

"See what a great job we did???"

It will be a spoonful of sugar for the other bitter medicine the shareholders will be asked to swallow.
And they are doing this even if it requires liquidating some holdings with excellent long term prospects, like SanDisk. Uncle Al was undoubtedly instrumental as a visionary and early believer in flash memory. Now SanDisk is being placed in the bargain bin at the Seagate garage sale.

To suggest that they are raising cash for future investments in competing technologies is, IMHO, giving Steve Luczo far much more credit than he deserves.
