To quote Fridays news article re: digital tv:
"Once known as High Definition tv, digital tv is a flexible system that someday may replace the existing analog technology thats 50 years old. Viewers will have to buy new tv's-initially costing $2-3K, or add converter boxes to their existing sets for $400. Local stations aren't expected to start broadcasting till early 98. "This really keeps the ball moving" says general manager of broadcast division of Harris Corp, which supplies transmission equipment to tv stations.
BROADCASTERS ARE EXPECTED TO SPEND AN ESTIMATED $6B TO CONVERT THEIR STATIONS TO THE NEW DIGITAL FORMAT, SAID THE HARRIS CORP. THE PRICE OF DIGITAL TRANSMITTERS ARE INLINE WITH EXISTING ONES, $400k TO 1M. For a period of time broadcasters will simultaneously broadcast both signals so nations 220M tv analog sets won't immediately be rendered useless."

Sounds like a lot of $ to me! Guess I'll have to break down and query AXC re: how they'll profit.
