Commission OKs pipeline expansion, conversion
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Monday approved a pipeline expansion that is expected to provide an additional 230 million cubic feet of natural gas to Southwest markets, including California.

Houston-based El Paso Natural Gas Co. plans to convert 785 miles of an existing pipeline that now carries crude oil so that it will carry natural gas to the high-demand California market.

Commission Chairman Curt Hebert said swift action by the agency, which made a decision on the case after only two months, "demonstrates our commitment to get needed energy supplies to serve the ever-increasing demand in the West."

The $154 million project involves a pipeline that runs from McCamey in West Texas to Ehrenberg, Ariz., near the California state line. El Paso is buying the line from All American Pipeline and converting it from crude oil to natural gas.
