Cobalt's right, you can up the pay, but you won't get more from low quality workers because they will always have an excuse to maintain their status quo work ethic. What does happen if you pay more, though, is better people will apply and gradually you will be working with those that pay attention to the customer, etc. Nordstrom worked this angle for years and they were the best, and paid the best. The "low quality" ones just got let go along the way.

I've thought about changing careers before, but one option I've considered, teaching, would involve too great a pay cut. So I decided to stay out of that pool.
